What are colorants?

Colorants can be divided into two categories.

One is a dispersible colorant, called a pigment. The other is a soluble colorant, called a dye.

What are pigments?

A pigment is a coloring substance that is insoluble in a solvent but can be dispersed in a medium (such as oil, water or resin) in the form of particles. They usually exist in the form of powder, granules or paste. The dispersibility of a pigment refers to its ability to be evenly distributed in a medium. The smaller the pigment particles, the more evenly dispersed, and the better the color effect

Pigments are further divided into two categories: organic pigments and inorganic pigments.

Organic pigments include:

1. Azo organic pigments: Including monoazo, such as pigment yellow PY3, PR3, PY151, PY180.

Disazo organic pigments, including pigment yellow PY14, PY83, and pigment red PR144, PR166.

2. Heterocyclic Organic pigments can also be divided into 4 categories.

Anthraquinone PR177.

Perylene series PR179, PBk32.

Quinoacridone PR122, PV19.

Pyrrolopyrrole (DPP) PR254, PO73.

3. Metallic composite organic pigments can be divided into copper phthalocyanine PG7, Blue 15:1, 15:3.

What are the main categories of inorganic pigments?

1. Metal oxides inorganic pigments can be divided into:

Titanium dioxide PW6.

Iron oxide PY42, PR101, and PBk11.

MMO/CICP Complex Inorganic Color Pigments PBr24, PY53, PB28.

2. Metallic effect inorganic pigments are also the main high-end effect pigment series on the market.

Including aluminum pigments, pearlescent pigments, and bronze powder

3. Other types of inorganic pigments include chrome yellow PY34, molybdenum chrome red PR104 and carbon black PBk6, PBk7.

What are dyes?

A dye is a substance that can be dissolved in a solvent and can evenly penetrate into the fiber, fabric or other material to color it. The main difference between dyes and pigments is their solubility and permeability.

Dyes can be divided into 4 categories, including

1. solvent-based dyes.

2. metal complex dyes.

3. acid dyes.

4. basic dyes.
